Alan Bennett’s award-winning series of solo pieces is a classic of contemporary drama, universally hailed for its combination of razor-sharp wit and deeply felt humanity. Miss Ruddock is “A Lady of Letters.” Her letters, unfortunately, are not social communications filled with harmless news, but letters of complaint and comment with comic and dire consequences. In the second piece, “Miss Fozzard Finds Her Feet” – as well as a new podiatrist, Mr. Dunderdale. Their weekly appointments soon raise the tricky question of who is treating whom.

NORTH VANCOUVER COMMUNITY PLAYERS’ OPEN THEIR 2022-2023 SEASON WITH TWO OF ALAN BENNETT’S MONOLOGUES FROM “TALKING HEADS” IN THE THEATRE AT HENDRY HALL.
The 2022-2023 season opens with a production of paired monologues from the Talking Heads series by celebrated British author Alan Bennett. It’s an unusual choice, with no bustling cast of the comedies and dramas that are staple fare for community theatre. “It’s quite the challenge to make these quiet pieces work in live theatre”, says Director Jennifer Morabito.
Her secret sauce is having two top-notch players (Nancy Ebert and Chris McBeath) with crucial acting chops.
She’s long loved Bennett’s writing and seized the chance to direct his work.“Bennett gets to the heart of everyday characters”, she says, “he shows their strengths and foibles with unique wit and insight.” And she insists “Talking Heads” themes are relevant today. “They’re funny, poignant, timely and timeless.”
The production is directed by Jennifer Morabito and produced by Sandy Branning.
Lighting design by Simon Drake, assisted by Chris MacCallum, set and sound design by Jennifer Morabito, set painting by Glynnis Brassil and Robin Hilliard and costumes by Carrie Smith, assisted by Jennifer Morabito.
