60-to-80-year-old male with increasing symptoms of dementia.  Outspoken, demanding and obsessive, Andre is desperate to control his environment – but memory loss makes it a losing battle.  As Andre’s condition deepens, confusion, doubt and loneliness expose his vulnerable underbelly.  A complex and compelling figure who utters hateful things yet his condition elicits the audience’s empathy.

35-to-55-year-old female.  The Woman’s true identity is revealed in the last scene of the play.  Until then, André’s dementia causes him to confuse her with Anne.  Intermittently throughout the play, The Woman takes Anne’s place in André’s memory.  She has the same hallmarks of Anne’s personality: dutiful, civil and compassionate, suffering humiliation and pain when André insults her or even fails to recognize her. 

35-to-55-year-old female, André’s daughter.  Caregiving is often a thankless task, but it’s particularly challenging with a patient like Andre.  Anne struggles to maintain civility and compassion while helping a father who doesn’t appreciate the sacrifices she makes for him.  The daughter who was always considered a disappointment, as an adult Anne still seeks attention and approval.  Her devotion to her father raises questions:  how much is genuine affection?  How much is fulfilling a moral and ethical duty?

30-to-55-year-old male.  Like The Woman, The Man’s true identity is revealed in the last scene of the play.  Prior to that, André’s distorted memory perceives The Man as an intruder masquerading as Anne’s husband.  The Man, like Pierre, is pleasant and personable, but transforms into a threatening and even terrifying villain in André’s mind.
